The two sides to the Gloria coin – rescue or pay!

The individuals under the employment of the Gloria Coal mine have not been paid for the last four months.

Their homes and cars are being repossessed, they can’t pay their bills, have no food or electricity.
And they are demanding to be paid.

While the top brass are doing everything in their power to keep everyone happy, they have a shaft full of trapped cable thieves on the one hand and hundreds of starving, honest and hard working employees expecting pay, on the other.

The rescue operation will cost the mine millions, an expense to add to their list.

Mr Mike Elliot from Gloria Mine informed www.mobserver.co.za that after a meeting in Pretoria yesterday, they are hoping to restore electricity on the surface, which will lead to the ventilation of the shaft. Once this is done, rescue teams can enter the shaft and evaluate the state of the shaft in a step by step process, to determine the level of damage caused by the blast.

Their employees, however, feel that if money is to be spent, then it should be on their salaries.

After the recovery of six people, the rescue operation has been standing still.

Out of the six recovered, only one man survived, and is currently in police custody.
He will be appearing in the Blinkpan Periodical Court on charges of trespassing.
