MHRF’s Mathunyane secures majority vote for council speaker

Cllr Thato Mathunyane of the Middelburg and Hendrina Residents Front has been elected as the new Speaker of council.

The vote took place shortly before lunch, with 36 in favor of Cllr Mathunyane, and 22 in favor of Alderman Marumo Sekgwele of the ANC.

The ANC’s vote in Alderman Sekgwele was bolstered by the single vote of former speaker, Cllr Thomas Mpye, council’s only independent member.

All opposition councillors voted in favor of Speaker Mathunyane.
