Police explosives unit investigating Eastdene Shopping Centre fire

According to unconfirmed reports, the Saverite Supermarket owner escaped from his burning store, after being tied up by robbers.

The Middelburg Observer can confirm that a team from the South African Police forensic and explosive units are on the scene where a blaze destroyed parts of the Eastdene shopping centre this morning.

An alleged attempted robbery took place this morning, while the Saverite owner was in the process of opening his store.

The robbers proceeded to tie the owner up, before allegedly setting the store alight.

Fortunately, the owner was able to escape through the shop’s back entrance.

He was then questioned by the police before being taken to the hospital, where he is currently being treated for the injuries he sustained this morning.

As at this stage, it is presumed an explosion is the cause of the blaze, with foul play suspected.

The Eastdene Shopping Centre fire is now under control thanks to the efforts of the fire brigade and help from the community.
