Memorial service for murdered Protea bass legend announced
All anglers have been requested to wear their highest ranking dress for John Wickham's memorial service, who was gunned down while protecting his wife during a break-away trip to Dullstroom.
A memorial service will be held for the late South African bass angling legend, John Wickham, at the Witbank Yacht Club on December 2, following the murder of the husband and dad of two, at a luxury Dullstroom guest house early Sunday morning.
Fellow travellers tried in vain to save Mr Wickham’s life, after he was shot multiple times during an invasion at The Wolery, a neighbouring extension of the luxury Browns’ Guest house, he and his wife Magda had been sleeping in during the attack around 04:20 Sunday morning.
Mr Wickham was rushed to Belfast Hospital some 30 km from Dullstroom, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Police have launched a manhunt for at least two armed attackers that entered the Wickham’s unit.
The memorial service will take place on December 2, at 14:00.
Attendees should confirm attendance by 12:00 on November 30, by clicking on the following link: John Wickham Memorial RSVP (google.com)
All anglers attending the memorial have been requested to wear their highest ranking dress.
Mr Wickham was a legend in the angling arena, having served as manager of both the Protea Junior Angling Team, as well as the President’s league.
He represented South Africa at an international bass angling event in Portugal as recent as October this year.
He leaves behind two young sons who, like their father, both obtained Protea angling colors, a dream Mr Wickham wanted had always wanted to realise.
Condolences are streaming in for the “gentle giant” who was felled while protecting Magda from the murderers.
The guest house has expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
