Prisoner who died in freak drain accident identified

The inmate who died after falling into a drain earlier this week has been identified and his family informed.

The inmate who died at Middelburg Correctional Services on Tuesday has been identified as Banele Golden Nkosi.
The reasons for his incarceration has not been provided.

Mr Nkosi allegedly slipped and fell into a subterranean drain while attempting to unblock it.
He ended up inside the drain just after the maintenance team successfully unblocked it.

Correctional officials and fellow inmates on the maintenance team tried in vain to rescue Mr Nkosi.

Emergency services and the local fire brigade assisted with retrieving Mr Nkosi’s body from the pit.
He was declared deceased soon after.

Mr Nkosi’s family has been notified of his passing.

A deeper investigation into events have been launched and a final report on the incident will be released upon finalization of the the probe.
