Explosion at mini-sub leaves large parts without electricity

An explosion of a mini-substation in Gholfsig last night left large parts of Middelburg and Mhluzi in the dark.

The explosion occurred shortly before 20:00 last light at a mini-substation in AG Visser Street, leading to power outages in Gholfsig, Groenkol, Clubville, Mhluzi Extensions 3; 4; 5l 7; 8, Mokokotlong, Chromeville, Mountainview, Tokologo, Vuka and Rockville.

According to DA Ward Councillor, Elsie Vermooten, electricity was restored to their ward within 30 minutes after the explosion.

While the cause of the explosion remains unknown, she wished to commend the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality’s electrical department for their quick response to restore power to the affected areas, “I also wish to thank the SAPS for responding and patrolling the area after the incident.”

A video of the explosion was captured on the CCTV footage of a resident in Cowen Ntuli Street, and widely shared on social media.
