Journalist in ICU after brutal attack

A Herald journalist is fighting for his life in the hospital after a vicious attack.

Thabo Mkanzi was walking with his friend last Thursday night in the CBD, near Waltloo Meat & Chicken heading to Mhluzi, when a group of about 10 men attacked them.

The men assaulted Mr Mkanzi and took his shoes and cellphone.

They beat him severely, his friend sustained a minor head injury.

He was taken to Middelburg Provincial Hospital and is currently in the intensive care unit due to a brain injury.

The owner of The Herald, Zaheed Khan, said Mr Mkanzi’s mother has filed a case with the Middelburg Police.

He added that Mr Mkanzi is a “humble person” who avoids conflict and confrontation, making the attack more surprising.
