Man arrested after video goes viral

A 54-year-old man was arrested yesterday (Thursday) after a video of his sister calling out the police for failing her was circulated online.

The woman expressed her frustration regarding the incident involving her family.

In the video, the woman accuses her brother of being involved in a murder and domestic violence.

The police said the brother was arrested on Thursday for violation of a protection order, trespassing, as well as crimen injuria.

They also said that according to the SAPS system, they could not find any murder case as alleged by the sister, however, she was urged by the police to come forward and clarify the murder incident.

The police noted that the suspect had previous cases:

• In one of the cases, the suspect was previously arrested on a case of rape opened in August 2023 involving a minor. The case is still ongoing in court.

• In a different case, his mother, now aged 80, opened a case of common assault in December 2019. The suspect was apprehended and charged but later found not guilty.

The Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, applauded the police today (Friday) for the arrest.

He called on families not to keep quiet when they experience gender-based violence and insisted that they must support each other and seek help when experiencing challenges “before it is too late”.
