Former Springbok rugby player joins MHS as a kicking consultant

Green and gold are colours that are all too familiar to Braam van Straaten, with the former Springbok having officially joined Hoërskool Middelburg as a kicking consultant.

The former fly-half and inside centre will prove invaluable to the development of Hoërskool Middelburg’s rugby sides, as the former kicking coach to the Australian National Team is a world-leading specialist in the art of kicking a rugby ball.

He has previously described kicking as a “skill that can become an art”.

At provincial level, Braam is best known for having played for the Stormers between 1999 and 2001. During this period, he represented South Africa with 21 caps and 221 points to his name.

The Blue Bulls, SWD Eagles, Valke and Griquas are among the other South African sides Braam has proudly played for, with English clubs Leeds Tykes and Sale Sharks rounding out his illustrious career.

In recent years, Braam has lent his expertise as a coach to the Sharks and then the Isuzu Southern Kings, but the allure of Middelburg has proved to be simply irresistible, with Braam set to teach Middies the true ways of the drop-goal and conversion.
