Middelburg NPO seeks donations to feed 40 families at Christmas

A lively colour festival in Vaalbank and an appeal for kitchen equipment aim to boost food relief efforts ahead of the organisation's annual holiday closure.

Forty vulnerable families in Middelburg could go without a meal this festive season as local non-profit organisation Sopkombuis appeals for urgent public support.

Sopkombuis Middelburg was founded in 2017 and provides food and clothing to families in need three times a week from January to November and once a week in December.

The group is currently collecting donations ahead of its annual holiday closure for families who rely on its assistance.

Sopkombuis founder Chantel Esterhuizen said that with the current resources, the organisation can assist only 40 families, benefiting 160 individuals.

“We want to help many more, but we do not receive enough donations, and we do have a waiting list,” Esterhuizen said.

Esterhuizen appreciated the generosity of Middelburg residents while stressing that more contributions are required to expand its reach.

Cooking equipment urgently needed

The organisation is appealing to the community for cooking equipment, such as gas stoves, gas cylinders and pots.

“In addition to non-perishable food, canned goods, dry food and fresh vegetables are needed,” she said.

“We also need freezers to store food so that it doesn’t get spoiled. We want to cook for more people,” she said.

“Every donation, no matter how small, will bring hope. We don’t want people to go to bed hungry. Together, we can make a difference.”

Colour festival raises funds in Vaalbank

Esterhuizen added that a colour festival will be hosted at Toe Word Ons Dors in Vaalbank to help raise funds for food and other essentials on November 14 from 10:00 until late.

“Entrance fee is R80 per person, with free entry for children under the age of 12,” Esterhuizen said.

“At the event, there will be stalls, games, raffles, colour packs and performances from different artists, including JP Meyer and Gothic Biker Angel,” she said.
