Driver killed in shooting

The driver who was shot multiple times before crashing his vehicle this afternoon has succumbed to his injuries.

Innocent bystanders watched the traumatic scene unfold in Dr Beyers Naude Drive, shortly after 16:00 after the driver of a Volkswagen Amarok crashed and came to a standstill at the slipway to the underground parking of the Wonderpark Centre.

An eyewitness has since come forward to share his account after driving into what he suspects was an attempted hijacking.

The witness was coming from Gholfsig’s direction and had turned right into West Street at the West-and Cowen Ntuli intersection when he saw a heavyset man hanging onto the drivers-side door with his head through the window.

The next minute, shots went off and the eyewitness made a U-turn to get out of the way of danger.

The Amarok came rushing past him and sped towards Dr Beyers Naude Drive where he lost control, drove onto the pavement and came to a stop at the underground parking’s entrance.

Bystanders rushed to the aid of the victim, who kept slipping in and out of consciousness. Three wounds were counted to his abdomen, shoulder and lower back area.

It has been reliably confirmed that the victim passed away after being rushed to hospital.

The victim is a prominent businessman from Middelburg.
