Lawyer accused of fraud remanded in custody

The attorney who failed to appear at previous court dates will reapply for bail, and remains in custody on charges of fraud.

Attorney Mantladi Jo-Anne Mmela, who has been accused of fraud, appeared before the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
She was rearrested after failing to appear in court earlier this month.

Her lawyer told the court that they would arrange bail on March 13. In the meantime, she remains in custody.

Mmela also failed to appear in court after she was first arrested in September 2022, where she was released on R25 000 bail.

She was initially arrested by the Hawks Mpumalanga team after they investigated a case involving the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

According to the Hawks, Mmela was appointed by a complainant after his child was severely injured during an accident, “The accused submitted the claim to the RAF. The claim was processed, and a payment was made into her trust account. The accused allegedly redirected the money to someone else’s account and claimed to have made the payments into the victim’s guardian account.”
