Guard accused of murder appears in court after fleeing bail
Murder accused Nqubeko Bright Mchunu appeared before the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court today (Monday) after being re-arrested after absconding bail a year ago.
The court gallery was filled with municipal workers in support of their former colleague Tshepo Maseko, who was shot and killed during a municipal strike in 2022.
The prosecution said it would oppose the bail application.
In the meantime, Mchunu will be remanded in custody until his formal bail application on May 15.
The accused was arrested last Friday in Soweto, Gauteng, after failing to appear in court last April.
Mchunu was employed as a security guard at the time of the shooting of Mr Maseko and several others.
It is alleged that the protesters started damaging municipal property before the shooting incident occurred.
