3 Hoërskool Middelburg players selected for Oakdale Rugby Week ‘All Star’ team – More than any other school

Abbey, the mercurial MHS No. 10, was also named Backline Player of the Week.

The Hoërskool Middelburg trio of Roux Grobler, Carlo Joubert and Matthew Abbey were selected among the Klein Karoo Saadproduksie ‘dream’ XV.

The decision to include the talented trinity of Middies was based on their stellar performances for the school during the Oakdale Rugby Week, with this Saadproduksie list an all-star recognition of the best players from the event.

Chosen from 32 schools, Abbey (Flyhalf), Grobler (Hooker), and Joubert (Prop), were deemed as the best players in their positions.

Abbey, the mercurial MHS No. 10, was also named Backline Player of the Week.

This follows an impressive start to the 2025 season for this year’s Craven and Academic Week hosts, who were also recently named the 38th Best Rugby First Team in the inaugural SA School Sports’ First XV School Rugby Ranking of the year.

This selection could also suggest that if these three stars continue their rich vein of form, a Pumas berth could very well be in the cards, something Abbey is no stranger to.

However, there is still lots of rugby left to be played with other Middies players looking to prove they have what it takes to book a spot on the provincial side.
