Kanonkop Spar open after reports of smoke

Customer exits retailer, reports smoke at one of Middelburg’s favourite shopping destinations.

Kanonkop Spar is open for business after smoke and a strong burning smell had a customer backtracking from the store this morning.

The customer reported the smoke to the Middelburg Observer, describing the odour as pungent enough for it to linger on her clothes despite her quick departure.

According to co-owner Abedith Nunes, Kanonkop Spar is open for business and everything is fine, despite the minor incident that left smoke hanging in the store.

“A staff member left one of the cookers on throughout the night, which was very irresponsible, but everything is fine. It could have been worse,” Nunes said.

She confirmed that no injuries or serious damage resulted from the incident, but admitted they were trying their best to get rid of the smell.

Business operations have not been hampered.
