Journalists shine at AVBOB FCJ Excellence Awards

The Middelburg Observer earned top national recognition with several awards at the AVBOB FCJ Excellence Awards, including sixth place in Newspaper of the Year

The Middelburg Observer once again proved its strength in community journalism with several recognitions at the prestigious AVBOB FCJ Excellence Awards and prize-giving dinner at the Protea Hotel Stellenbosch and Conference Centre, Techno Park.

This year, a record 541 entries were received, with categories spanning writing, photography, front and back pages, and newspapers of the year. A new category, mobile phone photography, was also introduced to acknowledge the role of smartphones in modern reporting.

The adjudication process was overseen by Dr André Gouws from Akademia.
The panel of judges, led by Gouws, comprised seasoned industry professionals, including Bruce Stephenson, Jacolette Kloppers, Alé Steyn, Tobie van den Bergh, Elsabe Retief, Kyle Cowan, Buks Viljoen, Jana Smit, Dewet Potgieter, Willem Kempen, Johann Maarman, Mercy Kannemeyer, Marlene Malan, Pieter Delport, Virginia Keppler-Young, Colin Hoffman, Johann Gresse, Cornia Pretorius, Yolanda van der Stoep, Mlungizi Louw, and Roger Sedres.

The Observer placed sixth in the Newspaper of the Year (paid) category, ranking among the country’s top titles.
Daleen Naudé placed third in the Headlines category, eighth in Human Interest and ninth in News Photography.
Gerhard Rheeder placed fourth in Investigative Reporting and tied third in Sport Reporting.
Matthew Handley earned sixth place in Sport Reporting.
Tiisetso Malunga ranked ninth in the Digital category.
