Hanging object has residents fearing public suicide

Strap loosely tied to bridge post.

Early morning commuters were met with a strange hanging object, dangling just above the water surface from the old Mijers Bridge.

The Middelburg Observer was called around 06:00 by residents worrying that the object might be a human body.

A few years ago, a homeless man was found hanging from a branch underneath the Meyers Bridge, just next to the historical Mijers Bridge.

With the incident still in mind, one caller told the Middelburg Observer that the object resembled a body.

Upon closer inspection, however, a large Hessian bag was found tied to a rope, and extended from the Mijers Bridge.

The content of the bag is unknown.

It is, however, heavy enough to weigh it down to just above the water surface.

A few other homeless people were found underneath the bridges.

None of them know who tied the bag to the bridge before dropping it below.

One speculated that a fellow homeless person perhaps hung the bag from the bridge to protect personal items from being stolen.

The strap tied to the bridge is loosely fastened with one knot.
