Motorists on the Stoffberg Road were stunned just after 17:00 today when a massive halo appeared around the sun, casting an otherworldly glow over the sky.

At around 17:00, Dewald Lubbe captured the astonishing spectacle on video and photos about 45km outside Middelburg.

According to information from the South African Weather Service website, a halo is a ring of light that forms around the sun or moon as light refracts off ice crystals present in a thin veil of cirrus clouds. “The halo is usually seen as a bright, white ring, although it sometimes displays colour.”
