WATCH: Community mourns loss of funeral industry visionary
A packed memorial service in Mhluzi reflected the profound influence of a well-known funeral industry leader whose dedication reshaped the sector and strengthened community safety initiatives.
Funeral industry pioneer Bernard Mahlangu (65) was laid to rest last Sunday following his unexpected passing on November 5 after a short illness.

A memorial service honouring his life, leadership, and remarkable legacy was held last Thursday at Eric Jiyane Hall in Mhluzi. The venue was filled to capacity as community members, dignitaries within the undertaker sector, Executive Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela, members of the Mhluzi SAPS, and various prominent local figures came together to pay tribute.

Speakers described Bernard as a visionary whose lifelong mission was to unite the funeral industry and establish a formal association that could address the challenges and grievances faced by funeral-parlour owners.
Bernard was the long-time owner of Tumebotsi Funerals, a company that served grieving families across South Africa and even reached into neighbouring SADC countries. His dedication, compassion, and commitment to service were widely recognised across the region.
Before delivering his address, Mayor Masilela played an emotional audio clip of Bernard’s voice, leaving many in the hall visibly moved. The atmosphere reflected the deep sense of loss felt not only by his family but by the broader community.
The mayor also announced that discussions will be held regarding the possibility of naming a building or street after Bernard, in recognition of his enormous contribution to the community.
In addition to his business achievements, Bernard was a passionate advocate for public safety and played a key role in establishing several Community Policing Forums in Mhluzi.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Ntombi Mahlangu, and their five children. His passing has been described as a profound and unexpected loss to both the funeral sector and the community he served with devotion.
