Rondebosch plot owners who have been fighting a long-standing battle with the Medina Abattoir that ‘slaughters animals on their doorstep’, claim the facility is non-compliant.

For years, authorities, including the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, have been complaining about alleged waste dumped near homes, an unbearable stench, water seeping from the abattoir, and cattle bellowing when they are unloaded at the abattoir.
After two weeks, the municipality has still not responded to the Middelburg Observer’s enquiries.
Medina’s owners said the complaints were just a vendetta by one resident, Willie Greyling.

Residents viewed their unhappiness

Greyling denied this and sent WhatsApp messages to the Observer, confirming that Shaun Sutton actually organised a meeting where residents viewed their unhappiness with the abattoir.
The residents are particularly shocked that an abattoir on their doorstep was approved by the authorities.

Provide an action plan within 30 days

In the latest revelation, the ‘Friends of Rondebosch’ group said the abattoir is non-compliant according to the Department of Water and Sanitation.
The letter, under the heading ‘outstanding issues – follow-up actions for water user’, indicates that the abattoir’s “non-compliances with conditions of WUL and transgressing provisions section 22 (1) of the National Water Act, 1998. These transgressions are offences in terms of Section 151 (1) of NWA, and it is important that the facility note that the Department takes the nature of findings as very serious and the Department may take necessary enforcement actions against the facility. The facility must provide an action plan within 30 days of receipt of the report”.

• Enquiries were sent to the Medina Abattoir about the allegation, but no response was received.
• A response from the Department of Water and Sanitation is also awaited.
