Mokokotlong residents demands permanent solution to sewage problem
When will something be done about the sewage problem in Avalon?
Community members in Mokokotlong, Avalon, are fed up with the ongoing sewage problems.
Philemon Basheer spoke to the Middelburg Observer about the stinky problem he has faced since 2023.
According to him, he has been reporting the problem to the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality’s Sanitation Department since 2023, with no resolve.
He said they usually sent someone to do repairs but the solution only lasts around three weeks, then the sewers block again. He added that municipal workers blame the sewage pipeline installed by the previous contractor.
Philemon said their lives have been severely affected by this because there’s faecal matter spilling out of his drain in the outside tap.

He can’t recall the last time he was able to open a window and enjoy some fresh air in his home. He further added that as someone with sinus problems, the stench is simply unbearable for him and his neighbours who also face a similar problem.
The community demands that the municipality provides them with a more permanent solution.

The Middelburg Observer reached out to the municipality for comment to find out what is causing these constant sewage blockages and if they have a more permanent plan in place to address this issue going forward. However, no response had been received at the time of publishing.
