Uitkyk teen appears in Middelburg Magistrate’s Court for murder
A teenager faces a murder charge after a man was fatally stabbed on New Year’s Day; the case was postponed for formal bail
A 19-year-old man, Katlego Gift Legjane, appeared before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, January 5, facing a charge of murder following a fatal stabbing in Uitkyk, Middelburg.
According to the police, officers were alerted to the incident at approximately 03:50 on January 1, after receiving a complaint about a man who had allegedly been stabbed. Upon arrival at the scene, police found the lifeless body of a man lying on the floor inside a house, with severe injuries.
The victim was later identified as 30-year-old Senzo Nhlakanipho Khumalo. Paramedics who attended the scene certified him dead.
A murder case was opened, and police launched an investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that Khumalo and Legjane were involved in an earlier altercation, followed by a second confrontation, during which Khumalo sustained fatal injuries. Legjane allegedly fled the scene after the incident.
Police managed to trace and arrest Legjane in Uitkyk later the same day.
During his court appearance, the case was postponed to January 12 to allow for a formal bail application. The suspect remains in custody.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has urged community members to resolve disputes peacefully and to avoid resorting to violence.
