Taxi owner assassinated at home in Extension 5

Footage reveals targeted killing of Sandile Mnyibe at his home in Extension 5, Middelburg.

Taxi owner Sandile Mnyibe was shot and killed at his home in Rondebosch, Extension 5, near Hlalamnandi, on March 31, moments after arriving home.

Initial reports suggested a drive-by assassination.

However, CCTV footage seen by the Middelburg Observer reveals a far more calculated and brazen attack.

The footage shows Mnyibe arriving at his property at 19:17, exiting his vehicle to open the gate, then driving into the yard. As he walked back to close the gate, a man who had initially passed the entrance turned around and approached him.

The suspect then produced a handgun and opened fire at close range.

After Mnyibe fell to the ground, the assassin walked up to him and continued shooting before calmly walking away from the scene.

The suspect was wearing a mask, concealing his identity.

Footage clearly indicates that the attack was a targeted killing.

Police later recovered several bullet cartridges, both inside and outside the property, indicating that multiple shots were fired during the attack. It was clearly seen on the video footage.

The provincial police have confirmed the murder and said an investigation is underway.

No arrests have been reported at this stage.

• The Observer attempted to obtain contact details for Mnyibe’s family but was unable to reach them by the time of going to press.
