Middelburg police sent an awareness message to community members during a Kosmos Radio interview yesterday (September 8), addressing crime that continues to affect Middelburg and surrounding areas.

Theft from motor vehicles, residential burglary, and gender-based violence were all mentioned during the interview.

According to Warrant Officer Nonhlanhla Mdluli, spare wheels, tyres, and rims are being targeted, so she encouraged the public to use padlocks and chains to deter thieves.

“Fit anti-theft wheel nuts for mags and rims, or special nuts that need unique keys. Park smart inside the yard, not on the streets. When at the mall, park where there are guards and CCTV cameras,’’ she said.

Mdluli reminded the listeners to lock all doors and windows before leaving their premises and when sleeping, and also emphasised the importance of outside lighting.

Tackling domestic violence

Domestic violence-related issues were also discussed.

Mdluli educated the community on the importance of not violating protection orders and also mentioned the severe consequences.

She emphasised the importance of immediately reporting gender-based violence and femicide, and also spoke about protecting vulnerable members of society.

Members of the public were also warned to be extra vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the police.

Mdluli encouraged the public to actively involve themselves in crime prevention by joining neighbourhood watch programmes or Community Policing Forums.

“Working together with the police helps strengthen community safety and build partnerships that contribute to reducing crime,’’ she stated.
