WATCH | Middelburg cyclist Jan Montshioa unharmed after Mhluzi hit-and-run

The South African road cyclist escaped without injury after a vehicle struck him from behind during a morning commute, reigniting calls for driver awareness.

Middelburg cyclist Jan Montshioa, who has represented South Africa in road cycling, escaped uninjured after being involved in a hit-and-run incident on Wednesday morning.

Hit-and-run incident

He had been riding with nine other members of the ‘Early Riders’ group at 04:30. After the training ride, he headed home to get ready for work.

While cycling through Mhluzi on his way to his job at Basson & Beyers Bicycle Shop in the Midwater Centre, he was struck from behind by a grey Avanza. The Avanza sped off before he could note down the registration number.

Another motorist stopped to assist him. Although he sustained no injuries, his bike was severely damaged. Montshioa expressed shock after observing motorists speeding through red traffic lights and stop signs during his ride.

Cyclist safety concerns

The collision highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety for cyclists, following several recent fatal incidents:

  • Lilitha Lombo (16) was struck and killed by a vehicle in Somerset West two weeks ago while training with her team.
  • Laura Blake (52) from Constantia was struck while cycling at 05:20 on August 12 and she succumbed to her injuries a month later.
  • Landon la Grange (61) from Durbanville died on April 7 after being struck by a taxi in Camps Bay the previous day.
  • In December 2025, Francois Esterhuizen (55), owner of Manic Cycles in Worcester, died in a hit-and-run accident. Like Montshioa, he was struck from behind.
  • Idries Sheriff (41) was declared dead at the scene in Camps Bay on December 16, 2025, after being struck by a car.
