Court delays murder sentencing of Middelburg man
Johannesburg teacher Kirsten Kluyts was killed during a 2023 park run in Sandton.
The sentencing of a Middelburg man convicted of murdering a Johannesburg high school teacher has been delayed until November 23.
Bafana Mahungela (23), who is originally from Middelburg, was due to be sentenced by the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday, October 27.
According to NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole, proceedings have been postponed to next month because Acting Judge Ian Cox was busy with another case.
Court convicts Mahungela on 5 counts
Mahungela was found guilty after a lengthy trial of the murder of Kirsten Kluyts, who was a teacher at Delta Park High School, Johannesburg.
Kluyts was murdered on October 29, 2023, while taking part in a park run at George Lea Park in Sandton.
The court delivered a guilty verdict for murder, kidnapping, attempted rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and defeating the ends of justice.
NPA vows to hold perpetrators accountable
After the postponement, Mohlatlole said the public could be assured that justice would be served.
“The NPA remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of serious and violent crimes are held accountable and face the full might of the law,” Mohlatlole said.
Mahungela remains in custody.
