New training centre opens in Midrand

THE Elijah Barayi Memorial Training Centre celebrated the opening of its new Branch in Midrand on 29 January.

The training centre on New Road gives back to the community by training shop stewards within the mining industry.

The executive director of the training centre, Mercy Sekano said the new branch is a step in the right direction for the Mineworkers Investment Trust. “The centre will offer arbitration courses, computer training, regional politics and labour law courses.”

ANC Secretary general Gwede Mantashe, was invited to speak at the opening. He is also a board member of the training centre.

Mantashe said, “The college and its expansion is a step in the right direction in that it is [giving] back to the community by educating shop stewards who could not previously afford to get an education.”

Mantashe also noted that the National Union of Mines and MIT are allowing employees time off to study. He said more courses needed to be introduced.
