Illegal dumping a health threat

MIDRAND resident Paula Woods has urged residents to stop dumping on Boshoff Road.

Woods and her daughter, Joyce Davidson have been living in Boshoff Road for more than 30 years and in this time they have seen it change drastically from a small agricultural community to a busy road between Ebony and Ivory Park.

The most pertinent side effect of all the changes is the illegal dumping taking place on the vacant lot across the road from them.

Woods said, “The area has become a local rubbish tip over the last few years. Our local builders, gardeners, and even a driving school truck has been seen dumping. More than anything, we worry about the schoolchildren who walk through the dump on their way to and from school.”

Over the years the road has become synonymous with trouble. It is not tarred and potholes are rife. An old cemetery on the side of the road has been defaced. “In the old cemetery there is a headstone from 1920.”

“Yet all around it there are discarded plastic bags. It’s so disrespectful,” said Davidson who added she had an idea of what to do with the vacant lot so that it wasn’t a hazardous dump.

“It should be cleared away for good and maybe for the owners of the land and the local residents to come forward and turn it into a park for the children.”

Residents can report illegal dumping by calling the City of Joburg call centre.
