Ivory Park Swimming Pool Complex could finally open this September
The wait for the long-awaited Ivory Park Swimming Pool Complex is nearly over as the Community Development Department works towards opening the completed facility in September.
Ivory Park residents could finally dive into their long-awaited swimming pool when the City of Joburg swimming pool season begins this September.
Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has confirmed that the R40m Ivory Park swimming pool complex is 100% complete, with all construction works concluded and the facility fully ready for its intended use.
Located in Ward 111 on Freedom Drive, once operational, the complex is expected to serve residents of Ivory Park, Kaalfontein and surrounding communities, providing a much-needed recreational and sporting facility for the greater Midrand area.
According to JDA’s acting senior manager for marketing, communication, and public relations, Elias Nkabinde, the project has also received its certificate of occupancy (CO), confirming that it complies with all statutory requirements for occupation and use.
“Although construction has been completed, the official opening of the facility is dependent on the City of Johannesburg’s operational readiness processes,” said Nkabinde.
“The project experienced delays primarily due to critical town planning processes required to obtain the CO, including the registration of the erf, approval of building plans, and the permanent connection of municipal services.”
In addition, he said extensive stakeholder engagement was undertaken to relocate residents who had settled on a sewer servitude, which prevented the connection of the main sewer line. “These matters have since been resolved, and the certificate of occupancy has now been secured.”

He added that the administrative handover has been completed following the issuance of the CO and the conclusion of the project’s final account.
The City of Johannesburg’s community development department is the custodian of the facility. The department is responsible for accepting the completed asset and managing its day-to-day operations, including staffing, maintenance, programming and public access.
“The official opening date will be determined and announced by the community development department once all operational and ceremonial arrangements have been finalised. As the implementing agent, the JDA does not determine the operational launch date of completed municipal facilities.”
He added that the project was completed successfully within the approved contract value of R40m, and there were no cost escalations during implementation.

“The JDA is proud to have delivered a world-class recreational facility that will provide residents of Ivory Park with access to quality sporting and leisure infrastructure.
“We look forward to seeing the facility opened for public use once the Community Development Department completes its operational readiness processes.”
Community development Region A sport and recreation manager, Enock Mosiea, said the pool season starts from September 1 to March 31 and, tentatively, should the department satisfy all the operational requirements of the facility, they will be good to open it on September 1 with the other city swimming pools.
“Although the construction of the facility has been concluded, the operationalisation is now in process. As it is still deemed winter and all pools open only on the 1st of September, the opening will be planned in sequence with the other pools,” said Mosiea.
