Premier appoints new MEC

GAUTENG - Gauteng has a new Economic Development MEC.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has appointed Mxolisi Eric Xayiya as the new MEC for Economic Development at a special briefing.

Xayiya replaces Nkosiphendule Kolisile, who died in a car accident on 20 July.

The new MEC has been a Member of the Provincial Legislature since 2009, serving in the oversight committee and is a former Mayor of Boksburg municipality.

Mokonyane said the necessary processes were followed in Xayiya’s appointment.

“He is the right candidate for this portfolio, he was selected to run this portfolio, this shows that there is something good about him,” she said.

However, Xayiya expressed shock at his appointment.

“I’m a bit shocked in a sense, knowing the premier and her way of ensuring that people work hard. The department plays a crucial role not only in the province but also in other Sadec regions,” he said.

Xayiya said he would meet with the management of the department to be briefed.
