Carlswald, Vorna Valley car jamming hot spots
MIDRAND- Police are advising the public to double-check that their cars are locked at all times.
Colonel Steven Moodley said Carlswald Shopping Centre, Carlswald Decor, Sanridge Mall and Vorna Valley Spar are hot spots for theft out of motor vehicles. According to Midrand police, 90 percent of this type of theft took place in those shopping centres.
Moodley said the problem arose when people simply press the key lock and walk away. “Vehicle owners must always check manually if all doors are locked,” he advised.
Moodley added in the past two weeks there have been about 45 cases of theft out of motor vehicles reported in those shopping centres, and that suspects used car jamming devices to stop a car from locking.
The police and sector policing forums have a new device that can detect any car jamming devices that are nearby. The device can pinpoint the location of a jamming device within a 100m radius. Some patrol cars have been fitted with the device and police hope it will go a long way in curbing this type of crime.
Moodley warned that in many cases car guards are at the centre of theft out of motor vehicles. “People who manage car guards must join the fight against crime with the police. We keep inviting them to our security meetings but they do not attend.”
Community Policing Forum chairperson Billy Rudlin said Sector 2, 3 and 5 will do a public drive at Carlswald, Vorna Valley Spar, and other hot spots to raise public awareness of criminal activities in those areas.
