Tranquillity Home Rehabilitation Clinic marks blossom day with message of hope and recovery
The Glenferness-based rehabilitation clinic used its annual community event to raise awareness about addiction recovery, mental health, and holistic wellness.
Tranquillity Home Rehabilitation Clinic in Glenferness hosted its annual blossom day on August 21, bringing together members of the community, staff, and stakeholders to promote hope, recovery, and holistic wellness.
Held at the clinic’s premises in Midrand, the community-focused initiative used the symbolism of the changing season to highlight renewal, personal growth, and the journey towards mental and emotional restoration.
Blossom day is intended to create greater awareness of addiction recovery and mental health, while encouraging individuals and families affected by these challenges to seek support. The clinic provides comprehensive rehabilitation and wellness services, including substance abuse and addiction recovery, mental health and psychiatric support, holistic treatment, and aftercare programmes, as well as community education and outreach initiatives.

During the event, Tranquillity marketing consultant Charlton Jones explained how the facility supports people struggling with addiction and other behaviours that have become unmanageable. “The clinic itself is a rehabilitation. We are a registered rehab with the department of social development, as well as the department of health.”
He said the facility operates an inpatient programme focused on behavioural substance abuse, including alcohol dependency, substance abuse, and other addictive behaviours. “We have a full, multidisciplinary team of psychologists, psychiatrists, and doctors, as well as a full detox unit where we do assessments.”
According to Jones, the clinic combines medical and psychological care with a holistic approach to recovery. Patients also participate in the Minnesota 12-step programme and follow a structured daily programme designed to equip them with tools to manage addiction and rebuild their lives.

Tranquillity nurse Jabulile Sikhakhane provided insight into the clinic’s detoxification process, explaining that each patient is assessed according to their individual condition and withdrawal symptoms. “We do the initial assessment and a bit of mental evaluation, and then I report that to the doctor.” The doctor is required to see a patient within 24 hours of admission, she explained, although the precise treatment approach depends on the patient’s condition and the substance involved.
Patients may spend three, five, or even seven days in detoxification, depending on the severity and progression of withdrawal symptoms. “Sometimes they will come in stable, but after two or three days they will start withdrawing.” In such cases, the detoxification period may be extended until the patient is considered stable enough to move into the rehabilitation programme.
Once detoxification has been completed, patients begin the clinic’s structured 12-step programme as part of their longer-term recovery. Sikhakhane said the process requires close monitoring because withdrawal can affect patients differently.

The clinic’s emphasis on individualised care also extends to patients’ daily needs. Facility chief Thandiwe Moyo said staff sometimes have to adjust meals for patients undergoing detoxification, who struggle to tolerate the regular menu.
“There are some people on detox who want their own meal because they cannot eat normal food that other people are eating. So, we have to switch the menus every day.” The adjustment, she said, forms part of the facility’s broader effort to ensure that patients are cared for throughout the recovery process.
As the name, blossom day, suggests, the initiative centres on the idea that recovery, like the changing of seasons, can represent a period of renewal. One in which individuals are given the opportunity to rebuild, grow, and move forward.
