Aftercare with a difference

Children express their ideas, feelings and thoughts in a constructive manner.

CARLA De Gouveia and Claudia Mendonça believe that in today’s fast-paced and increasingly electronic environment, it is important that children are able to express their ideas, feelings and thoughts in a constructive manner.

They said this is the key for children to develop into balanced, well-rounded individuals.

In 2012, De Gouveia, a yoga instructor, and Mendonça, an artist, hosted an Express!ons Holiday Programme and identified a need for an holistic aftercare centre where children can feed their creativity.

Hence Express!ons Kids Club was launched.

De Gouveia said, “We offer a safe and fun environment for children of all ages to explore and creatively express themselves in the four key life skills areas: visual arts, performance arts, physical wellness and personal well-being.”

The club is based in Carlswald Valley, Midrand and children are assigned an equipped workstation where they can tackle their homework, under the supervision of a facilitator.

Every afternoon, a different extra-mural activity is offered, including art, yoga, drama, dance, music, crafts and cooking.

“Special activities such as study skills, self-defence, theme days and motivational speakers will also feature,” said De Gouveia.

The club offers a full-day programme during the school holidays and gives adults a creative outlet for themselves over the weekends in their adult classes.
