Local lad aims to win

MIDRAND - A young boy from Austin View was chosen to participate in a singing competition in United States in July.

Darius Joubert (11) was one of three boys chosen to represent South Africa at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles.

Unfortunately due to financial constraints, Joubert will not travel to the USA this July, but his parents are determined to raise money for him to participate in the same competition next year.

Speaking to Mix FM presenter Roxy Blows and Midrand Reporter about his plans to raise money for July 2015, Joubert said, “I am very excited that I made it this far, it has been a great opportunity and I will enter the competition again next year. They chose me because they saw the talent I have. I have a diploma and two gold certificates from the National Eisteddfod Academy and held a score of 94 percent.

“I also got awarded four silver medals and one bronze by the South African Championships of Performing Arts. I am proud of my achievements so far.”

He added that he liked to sing blues, pop and Broadway music.

Joubert’s mother Karina, said hard work and great opportunities have made it possible for her son to get this far. She said, “Darius started exploring his singing talent in 2012 and has since participated in singing competitions.

“An opportunity like this comes to very few in South Africa. My son will soon get a chance to match his talent with his peers from around the world.”

Dr Ellen Roux of South African Championships of Performing Arts in South Africa confirmed that Joubert was one of the children chosen to go to the competition in USA, but unforeseen circumstances had changed that.

She said, “Needless to say, he and the other children on the list are very talented. We look forward to him joining us next year. This is the 17th time we are taking a group of children to the USA to participate in competitions.”
