Help feed horse unit

MIDRAND - The Highveld Horse Care Unit needs the help of the community to feed over 100 horses in its care.

While the horses, which are neglected and in desperate need of care from the unit’s staff, are stabled just outside Meyerton, Midrand resident and fundraiser for the unit Joanne Pursey is calling on community members in the Midrand and Kyalami horse areas to help feed them.

Pursey said Midfeeds, which is based in Blue Hills, has an on-going campaign to help the unit.

She said community members can phone and order a bag of feed for the unit, for R164, and Midfeeds would deliver it to the unit in Meyerton.

“We have found that our feed bills are escalating along with inflation, and from the beginning of 2014, our average feed spend has been R84 000 a month,” said Pursey.

She said the unit was working hard to raise funds but they were in need of the community’s support. “Particularly with winter upon us, as we know that the problems will increase,” said Pursey.

She said the Midfeeds campaign was helping to reduce the unit’s feed bill and the money can be used for the treatment and care of the horses coming into the unit.
