Jobs for the people

RABIE RIDGE - The Rabie Ridge community protested that a community member was not selected as the Community Liaison Officer for the new project of upgrading Modderfontein Road.

The upgrade will see the road re-surfaced from Ward 110 in Midrand to Ward 12 in Ekurhuleni.

Chairperson of the Rabie Ridge Residents Association Charles Jones believed the selection of the liaison officer for the project involved nepotism. This is the second time the association has claimed this in a matter of months. In March, the community protested the appointment of a Community Liaison Officer for the refurbishing of the community hall as he was not a community member.

In response, Ward 110 councillor Lesibana Lamola said it was not a case of nepotism, but rather that the best man for the job was appointed. “The community handed in their CVs to this office and the contractor chose the person who he thought was the best for the job,” he said. “If the community believes that is not so, they should look through the CVs that were submitted and see that the one chosen was the best for the job.”

He said it was now out of his hands and was up to the contractor to re-advertise the position.

Lamola said Rabie Ridge residents would be offered jobs in the eight-month project of re-surfacing the road.

He believed the Rabie Ridge community caused more harm than good for themselves by protesting every time projects arose in the township, because contractors would be reluctant to work in the settlement.
