Soccer players awarded for successful season
GLEN AUSTIN - After a successful soccer season on the field, the efforts of the pupils at Glen Austin High School were recognised in an awards ceremony.
Pupils, parents and teachers attended the prize-giving to congratulate pupils on their achievements.
The soccer team played seven matches, won six and drew one, and all 14 soccer boy pupils received a medal for their achievements. Two players were recognised for their performances, they were Lesibana Muofhe, who was awarded man of the season after he played three “outstanding” matches, and Samkelo Mvelase, who was awarded the Golden Boot of the season after he scored 12 goals during the season.
The school’s sports co-ordinator Loshnee Lyer explained how watching the pupils play soccer made her heart race throughout the season and she was so proud at how well they played.
“Every one of you took advice gracefully, understood that I know what I am talking about, and showed respect. It was an amazing season,” said Lyer.
She also thanked soccer coach Berthold Moyo for his hard work and dedication. Moyo, in turn, gave a vote of thanks to the school and pupils. “Nothing is more exciting than winning something. We did well this season, and for next season, I hope we will have a lot of vigour and more stamina,” said Moyo.
The school’s principal Alec Abbott, said it was an exciting day to acknowledge the pupils’ achievements.
“It is important to reward pupils’ excellence as this was a dream of the founders of the school,” said Abbott.
He said the pupils’ achievements helped to build a reputation for the school in the Midrand community.
Abbott inspired the pupils to never give up. He showed them a video of a man who was injured as a paratrooper in the Gulf War and was told he would never be able to walk unassisted again. Through determination, the man started yoga, lost weight and managed to walk unassisted again.
Abbott said, “You can apply the slogan to never give up to everything in your life, not only soccer but in the learning areas which you are struggling with too.” He urged the pupils to believe in themselves.
