Appeal to invest in children’s education
MIDRAND - Non-profit organisation Love Trust, which has established two schools in Midrand, hosted a ladies breakfast to encourage women to think of others.
While the organisation operates in Midrand, the breakfast was held in Craighall Park on 20 June.
Love Trust fundraiser Lindsay Owen said the breakfast presented the opportunity for women who were key individuals within the corporate sector to learn more about Love Trust. This was to build a network of contacts within the business community.
Owens said with so many charities, she understood that companies sometimes felt overwhelmed about who to help.
Owen and chairman of Love Trust trustees board of governors Martin Morrison explained that Love Trust was established in early 2009 to serve vulnerable children and their communities.
The organisation established Christ Church Preparatory School and College in Midrand in 1997, and in 2010 it established Nokuphila School in Tembisa to provide education to children from poor backgrounds. Quality education, meals and after-care facilities are offered to 240 pre-schoolers. Over time, the school will also offer secondary school education.
Love Trust also has a teaching training centre in Tembisa for community members.
A highlight of the networking breakfast was an interview by Owen with former Miss South Africa Peggy Sue Khumalo who is a Love Trust ambassador. Khumalo said she believed education was important as it offered a platform of opportunities, and said it was important for stakeholders to get involved in shaping children’s futures.
She said there is a platform available for stakeholders to get involved and help to build up Love Trust and involve themselves in shaping children’s futures.
Khumalo told her story of growing up in rural Newcastle to waitressing tables, modelling and getting her break as Miss South Africa. She said former president Nelson Mandela opened doors for her to attend the University of Manchester, with the help of Investec where she still works today.
Khumalo adopted Mandela’s value of education and was inspired by the work of Love Trust, and noted Owen’s passion and drive for offering education.
“I truly believe that every woman has the ability to get involved in children’s education,” said Khumalo.
Owen said through helping Love Trust, companies could receive a tax rebate and Black Economic Empowerment certificate.\
