‘Woman on the run with stolen baby’

IVORY PARK - Police are looking for a woman who allegedly stole a child on 1 July.

Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said a Mozambiquan female suspect is on the run after allegedly stealing a three-week-old baby boy. The baby was stolen from Ivory Park Extension 15.

The mother of the child, Marta Chambal, told police that the suspect, who identified herself as Sophie, had met Chambal a day before the alleged incident. The suspect pretended that she needed a place to stay for a short while. Chambal told Sophie to speak to her landlord and ask for a place.

The suspect claimed that the landlord had refused to give her a place and said she would go and stay with a friend in Ivory Park Extension 2.

Before the suspect left she offered to buy clothes for Chambals’ baby.

The two women and the baby went to Kopanong shopping centre and the suspect gave Chambal R100 to buy baby clothes. While she was paying for the purchases, the suspects’ phone rang and she went out of the shop with the baby to answer the phone.

Officer Sekgobela added,”That is when the suspect allegedly disappeared with the baby. The child’s name is Thulani Chambal, he was wearing a light blue baby grow, a white vest and a white hat.”

Warrant officer Sekgobela said the suspect is between 25 and 30 years of age, is dark in complexion and is heavily built. Anyone with information may contact Captain Hlengani Shilenge on 082 778 9378.
