Wanted UK fugitive arrested in Midrand

MIDRAND - The police’s National Crime Intelligence Unit and South Africa’s Interpol officers arrested a drug trafficker and fraudster at a complex in Midrand on 2 August.

SA police Service tweeted that the man was one of the United Kingdom’s most wanted fugitives.

The man will appear in the Pretoria Regional Court on 4 August for an extradition hearing.

SA Police Service said the man was a convicted drug trafficker and fraudster from Wales.

@SAPoliceService tweeted, “He had been on the run since 2011 when he failed to return to prison after being released on a five-day licence.”

Investigators of the National Crime Agency were alerted that the man was in South Africa and surveillance began.

National police commissioner General Riah Phiyega congratulated the team for their efforts.

@SAPoliceService tweeted, “Hank Cole, Head of [International Operations] for the [National Crime Agency said,] “We have the capability to track them down [and] bring them to justice.

“British High Commissioner to SA Judith Macgregor [said], “This arrest is testimony to the close working relationship between the UK [and] SA on security issues [including] tackling drug trafficking, organised [and] fiscal crime.”
