VIDEO: Taxi drives over concrete balls
MIDRAND - Just like any part of Johannesburg, taxis are a headache in Midrand. Some taxis ignore road rules, while others are not roadworthy.
A motorist, who did not want to be named but whose name is known to Midrand Reporter, sent photos of a taxi driver who was driving on a pedestrian pathway on Dale Road. She said everyday between 6am and 8am many taxis on Dale Road drive recklessly, and create a hazard for pedestrians and cyclists, especially on the pathway.
A Vorna Valley resident and member of the residents’ association, Mel Worman, shared a video of one of the taxis driving recklessly.
Worman has since put up home-made signs to ask motorists to slow down.
She posted the video on Facebook and wrote, “I put solid concrete balls along my pavement and a few running up the road to my wall.” In the video, the taxi appeared to have lost control and it barely missed a street pole and a tree, then drove through two 23kg concrete balls.
She added that Albertyn Road is in desperate for speed regulation.
In response to the speed regulation on Albertyn Road, Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “To ensure the safety of the community, the agency will investigate possible traffic calming measures on Albertyn and Carnat Road as requested by residents.”
On 29 July Metro police impounded 11 taxis for driving on the shoulder along the R55 between Arthur Road and the R562. Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane told Midrand Reporter that each taxi would be released after a fine of R500.
She said the Metro police would be sent to monitor the situation at Albertyn Road. “They will go there at peak hour. Any taxis and other motorists breaking road rules will be arrested, fined or have their vehicles impounded.”
