A teacher at Glen Austin High School, Amelia Beukes, said, “This is a South African Model United Nations initiative that brings together resourced and under-resourced pupils to form a combined debating team. The competition was held at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.”
She said the topic of discussion focused on the humanitarian crisis in Syria caused by the ongoing civil war.
“Brando Moyo and Rutendo Chibwowa from Glen Austin High School, and Koketso Mabaso and Thamsanqa Makhoba from Eqinisweni Secondary School were worthy delegates who argued and debated well on policies.”
The competition also teaches the principles of tolerance, peace, and values of the United Nations which include human dignity, equality and equity.
Moyo said, “I have learnt a lot from this competition and hope to better our teams’ performance in the next debate in 2015.”
