The men were spotted by two undercover police who were on duty at Morris Street on 11 November.
Constable Nanty Belebesi, social crime prevention co-ordinator, confirmed the men are from Alexandra and are between the ages of 25 and 30 years.
They were in a white Toyota Avanza with tinted windows, which aroused the police men’s suspicions as a vehicle fitting that description had been linked to previous burglary cases.
The police did a check on the vehicle and found the vehicle had no license disc.
After further tests had been done, they found the vehicle had been reported as stolen in Alexandra.
According to Belebesi, the police called for back up when the suspects tried to drive away. They gave chase and were joined by three other police vehicles and eventually cornered the Avanza on Le Roux and Old Pretoria roads. As the vehicle was being searched, the unlicensed firearm was found hidden in the gear console.
“All five men have been arrested,” said Belebesi.”They are currently being held in our holding cells.”
