Hijackers pose as passengers

IVORY PARK - Police are appealing to taxi operators and residents to be careful when driving around and to make sure that their vehicles are safe at all times.

Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said, “When operating during the night, taxi drivers become easy prey to hijackers pretending to be needing transport. We have a lot of such cases lately.”

She stated that on the evening of 26 January, a 20-year-old man was hijacked by three men while the complainant was driving a Toyota Tazz, which was being used as a taxi. Sekgobela said the complainant drove from Tswelopele to Clayville.

The suspects allegedly opened the vehicle’s doors and got inside the car, while it was moving at the traffic lights at Republic Road in Tswelopele.

“One suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at the complainant while another held a knife to his throat. They got him out of the car, assaulted him and robbed him of his cellphone and cash before they drove off with his vehicle.”
