Child chokes to death on a banana
IVORY PARK - A little girl died on 28 January after choking on a banana in Ivory park Ext. 8.
Ivory Park police spokesperson Neldah Sekgobela said, “According to the child’s mother, the girl was visiting her uncle in Ext. 2 at the time of her death. The mother went to the uncle’s place with bananas, and, to collect the child. On arrival, her child was playing with her cousin.”
The child’s mother cut a banana into pieces and gave it to the children and they went to play. After a few minutes, the five-year-old girl complained that her throat was sore and asked for water.
“It is alleged that after drinking the water, the child’s breathing did not improve and she started vomiting. The child was taken to the paramedics who were next to Ivory Park Police Station at the time. The girl was declared dead upon arrival,” said Sekgobela.
Sekgobela urged parents to take great care of their children, especially when they are eating and playing. “The little girl’s death could have been avoided.”
