Suspect gets life sentences

IVORY PARK - Sipho Edwin Mzimba, has been given two life sentences at Palmridge High Court.

Mzimba was one of the masterminds behind the business robberies and murders in Ivory Park Ext. 7 in 2013 and 2014. Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said, “In November 2013, the accused attacked three victims who were about to drive away from their place of business in the evening. The accused shot the victims at close range, one victim died at the scene while the other two victims were taken to hospital to be treated for bullet wounds.”

Sekgobela explained that the accused also attacked a man and shot him on his upper body in January 2014. The victim died at the scene and the accused proceeded to the deceased’s tuck shop and stole money, air time and cigarettes.

In another incident on 13 January last year, the suspect was arrested by Ivory Park police and the dockets investigated by Detective Constable Popedi.

“The cases were referred to Palmridge High Court where a judge handed down two life sentences for two counts of murder. Mzimba was sentenced to 15 years in prison for robbery, 24 years for attempted murder, 15 years for attempted robbery and another 15 years for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Sekgobela said Ivory Park police are happy with the way the case was handled, and Mzimba’s sentence should send a message to criminals who think they will not be brought to book for their crimes.
