Baby dies in care of nanny

IVORY PARK - A child died in Ivory Park Ext 13 on 28 January after the nanny left him sleeping on a couch in the living room.

Ivory Park police spokesperson Neldah Sekgobela said, “A one-year-old boy was left in the care of a nanny when she [the nanny] decided to go to the shops [which were] a short distance away to buy food as she said she was starving.”

It is alleged that the other person present in the house at the time of the baby’s death was the baby’s 19- year-old sister who was in one of the other rooms in the house. She was not aware that the nanny had gone out. The sister found the baby sleeping on the couch and left the baby to sleep.

A while later after the nanny returned, the sister decided to check on the baby and noticed that he was vomiting. His stomach was allegedly swollen too. Paramedics were called to check on the baby, but it was too late. They certified the boy dead on arrival.

Sekgobela said the cause of death is unknown and an inquest docket has been opened.

Ivory Park police are appealing to the community to take care of their children and ensure that they are safe and well looked after at all times.
