Principal warned for using litter punishment during school hours
IVORY PARK - The Gauteng Department of Education revealed that a school principal in Ivory Park has been warned about the school's punishment system, however this punishment continues.
The issue came to light when councillor Inneth Mbatha of Democratic Alliance Corporate and Shared Services alerted the media to the issue. She said, “Every morning, pupils from Umqhele Secondary School spend time picking up rubbish while their counterparts are learning. When I asked someone at the school why this is happening, I was told it was part of the punishment for late coming.”
Mbatha pointed out that punishment can be done after school or on weekends without impacting on learning time.
The Department of Education’s spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said that this is not the first time a complaint about the school was made. “We are aware that the school is having difficulty dealing with late coming. The district has spoken to the school principal after this incident came to light,” said Sekhonyane.
Sekhonyane added that the principal was encouraged to enforce the school’s code of conduct which stipulates appropriate sanctions based on the level of misconduct. The school will also consider enforcing detention instead of pupils having to pick up papers.
