Law enforcement officials have opened an inquest docket after the body of an alleged drowned male was recovered in a stream inside an abandoned mineshaft in Klipfontein.

On August 4, at around 20:00, divers from Johannesburg water policing and diving services were deployed to a drowning scene at the corner of Masala Road in Klipfontein near Rabie Ridge.

Gauteng police emergency services media liaison Officer Raymond Sambo said that, upon arrival, the diving team recovered the body of an unidentified man from the stream inside the abandoned mineshaft.

“The body was handed over to Rabie Ridge police members at the scene, and an inquest docket was opened for further investigation.” The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Sambo urged residents to exercise extreme caution around rivers, dams, streams, and other open bodies of water to prevent avoidable tragedies.

“Individuals venturing into dams, rivers, or any water for any activity are advised to do so only with a life jacket. Parents of young children near open waters should educate them about the associated dangers, and ensure constant supervision.”
