Ernest Mahlaule was elected as the sector’s chairman while Clive Saunders was elected as his deputy. Romoagi Motlhamme and Conrad Gengan were elected secretary and deputy secretary respectively.
The sector’s AGM was attended by a handful of people which is reflective of the small community within the sector. The sector only consists of three suburbs, which are Halfway House, Randjiespark and Corporate Park, the majority of which are businesses.
Their committee consists of nine members instead of 12, as unlike other sectors in Midrand, only nine candidates were eligible to be in the committee. Of these nine members, four were chosen for the executive committee. The three other members will be elected after their first committee meeting.
A number of challenges the sector is facing were mentioned, however, the lack of manpower seemed to dominate.
Station commander Colonel Steven Moodley said, “We need guys on the ground, we need organisations such as churches to encourage the community to join our reserve force.”
Newly-appointed Sector 5 commander, Constable Samuel Matumba gave the crime report for February. “There were 44 crimes reported at the station [including house and business robberies].”
Matumba shared some of his hopes for the sector. “All I would like is for the Midrand community to be unified against crime,” he said.
He believes that his role is to serve as a link between the community and the police.
“Policing is not just for police. I am calling on the community to work together with the police for a safer environment.”
This was a sentiment shared by the new Sector 5 executive board.
“We need to bring our best ideas to the table and let’s revive Sector 5,” said Mahlaule.
